Workshop objectives/outcomes

  1. To get buy-in and clarity on the workstream we are undertaking with participating projects and to introduce them to each other
  2. To build an agreed framework together for agreeing key criteria for which we should gather the evidence
  3. Testing our framework against some reflections or principles from a body of experts (this may have to happen more iteratively as we go forward)
  4. Timelines and guiding principles for how we will collate and share the growing body of evidence as we go forward


We have three types of participant - the CCSL family members, our project participants and our "specialists or critical friends" We have been aiming for a broadly even mix but it is looking likely that we will have less specialists at the meeting but may be able to share findings with them going forward. We will also be inviting their opinions on our thinking before the workshop.

Self-assessment and background reading


June 16th:
9.00 - 10.00 - Coffee and introductions
  • Process: Welcome by Liz (?):
    • [ELB] Free run of speed dating (30') to find sthg in common and then
    • 1-2-4-8-all (30') around a question like 'Social learning: fallacy, functional, fairy tale or fad? What is your take?'
10.00 – 10.15 - Purpose and aims of the meeting
  • Process: Introduction (Liz) of the objectives and agenda... on the wiki

10.15 – 11.00 - Social learning – what it is and what it isn’t, difference between participatory methodology and social learning – really understanding triple looped learning [PC]
  • Process: Introduction (Liz) of the work we have done on defining social learning - possibly short presentation (verbal? Prezi?) for 5-10'
    • Drawing of 3 loops (Liz)
    • Discussing some cards (that we will have prepared) introducing different families and what we say about this stuff... highlighting differences, overlaps, questions etc. we have (20' discussion) and inviting anyone to come up with illustrations for these...
    • Ending with Samoan circle (15-20') to bring back ideas from the table group discussions...

Presentation, short plenary discussion for clarification
11.00 – 11.30 - Coffee + Tea
11.30 – 1.00 - Flash presentations from projects (2-3 minutes - guidance sent in advance) who they are, what they are about, reflections on the social learning self assessment, challenges, opportunities - look for synergies

  • [ELB] Process: each team presents this in 1' and sit in batches of 5 projects around the room. Participants can attend the flash presentation of each project more than once then. 20-25' to engage with the projects being presented and to go around to fetch some ideas. Leave some post-it notes on each stand/flipchart sheet to gather information, ideas, insights etc.

1.00 – 2.30 - Lunch
2.30 – 3.30 - Flash presentations from projects (2-3 minutes - guidance sent in advance) who they are, what they are about, reflections on the social learning self assessment, challenges, opportunities - look for synergies

  • [LC] Process: Same as above. Try to keep some options open for a 5' debriefing in plenary...

15.30 – 16.00 - Coffee + Tea
16.00- 17.30 - Presentation on M&E for social learning – what we know so far, how do we track triple loop learning, what should the KPIs be. Something on good conditions for social learning. Where are the synergies between project self assessments and criteria we know about - start to cluster and agree top ten factors/criteria
  • Process:
    • [ELB] 1' to think about key areas that stand out - important areas to assess... perhaps focusing on introverts...
    • [ELB] (15-20') In fact, this might be the place to debrief from the previous space. It'd be great to arrive at insights from these projects about the kinds of assessment, metrics, KPIs etc. they've used, so we can elaborate on that and relate the presentation. Perhaps we can do the Samoan circle here if not done earlier. If not addressed earlier, this could also use a 3' reflection per project to share KPIs and methods of assessment on cards so we can bring them together...
  • [LC] Then we proceed with the presentation (10-20' including Q&A)
  • [PC] Then we go back to project teams and reflect on KPIs
  • (10') Then sorting out the clusters collectively in a facilitated manner - identifying those clusters... Things that we know are extremely important for SL to work out and that we want to better understand/assess
  • (20') Then some work in focus groups around some of these clusters to identify good, strong KPIs and ways to assess them...
  • (20') Back in plenary to share results and decide on top criteria

18.45 - Dinner

June 17th: (focus on change agenda, not capacity for change)
8.45 – 9.00 - Coffee + Tea
  • Process: Keep some information about M&E methods/approaches/tools around for that coffee / tea?

9.00 – 11.00 - Working groups looking at key criteria and building KPIs or success factors - what would tell us whether our criteria were in place or behaviours changing to ensure good performance?
  • Process: In teams think about the 5 KPIs (from either list) that you would work on (and think a bit about the 'how')
  • Then share that with another project;
  • Report back your 5 KPIs on the table on the wall;
  • We cluster up those KPIs to identify which KPI areas we want to unpack - We focus on 5 KPIs that we (CCSL) are going to keep track of

11.00 – 11.30 - Coffee + Tea

11.30 – 13.00 - Report back from each group - agreement from group around suggested KPIs - look for duplications, refine into framework
  • Process: Zooming in on these KPIs, what are sub-areas and what are ways to monitor these.
  • Mention a template to do this, including further references/projects, connections with other KPIs etc. 5' presentation for each KPI + 2-3' Q&A

14.30 – 15.30 - Final confirmation of M&E framework/programme and round of commitments to adoption by projects, challenges ahead, what is possible
  • Process: Mini Open Space to go through this and/or display the KPIs on the wall and each project can put some post-it notes indicating what they aim to do about each KPI (if anything)
  • Coming back to the visuals...
  • Including parking lot areas...

15.30 – 15.45 - Coffee + Tea

15.45 - 16.00 SANDBOX PRESENTATION (15')

16.00 – 16.30 - Round up, evaluation and next steps and some guiding principles for ways of working (responding to straw man)
  • Process: Do a final impromptu networking of 10-12' (what will we do to make this workshop useful and keep in the loop) + 10' spectrogram on achieving results / using them / aha moments + 5' next steps
